FX Traders

This page is for active traders in the FX Market to share ideas and experiences for the benefit of others

To get started in fx trading, there is an excellent free site available http://www.babypips.com/

Choosing A Forex Broker:In order to trade the forex market, you need a forex broker. There are many forex brokers, and unlike other types of trading, there is no one centralised market. Instead there are thousands of forex brokers who set their own currency prices and spreads. Competition however minimizes difference in prices and spreads between different brokers. But every forex broker is slightly different, and you should check that the broker that you’re looking at will give you a good deal.

Tips in checking out a forex broker:

1. Margin provided (usually 1-4%)

2. Their spreads for the currencies you’ll be trading. In Forex trading the ‘spread’ is the difference between the buy and sell price of any given currency pair. Lower spreads save you money.

3. Amount of funds required to open an account. For new traders with small capital, being able to open a micro trading account with only $250 (we recommend at least $1,000) is a great feature for new traders.

4. Any fees for small trade sizes (many don’t charge fees for smaller trade sizes, but some do) or any other fees (details of overnight rollover fees)

6. Whether the broker automatically closes your position if the position goes against you by the entire value of your account not used as margin for that trade.

7. What their charting package and forex trading platform is like. It should allow traders to trade directly on the charts. Must provide a demo account to practice.

9. How established the company is.

10. Whether orders are executed instantly at the price you see.  Don’t settle with a firm that re-quotes you when you click on a price or a firm that allows for price ‘slippage’. This is very important when trading for small profits.

Here is a link I use from time to time. This is a blog by Tony Juste who gives day trading tips and analyses on currency pairs:   http://advisor.fxstreet.com/

In case you need to see currency charts with with studies without the need to download fx trading platforms here is an excellent website  http://netdania.com/ChartApplet.asp

    1. Don’t know, never used it. Since its free to you why not just go through it.

    2. You have to look for you the YOU find easy to use and are comfortable with. Every platform is different and so is every trader’s “easy” and “comfortable”. You can start your search with Oanda but feel free to look at others as well. Dummy trade for at least one year. After that wait until you post 3 consecutive months of profits. Then you can think about moving forward.

    3. The same one that that you liked in your demo phase

For those experienced traders out there I am in need of some advice.
An MTI CD set has been given to me for my use and I am seriously considering attempting to learn how to do this FX thing.
    1. Is the MTI instruction any good or not.
    2. Which platform should one use to practice dummy trade and for how long?
    3. Which is the best platform to use for live trading should I eventually reach that level.
    4. What are the best “help” sites?
    5. In the eventuality of going into live trading what would you say is the optimum minimum amount of money that one should use to fund the account?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated guys.

Cable didnt even get to 1.5 before it met resistance…with the need for dollars across europe & the uk i dont see cable going too far north. geithners admission to printing money for the rest of the year gave eur and cable (gbp)a pop in the last few weeks, but it cant counteract the dollar demand caused by global deleveraging. there is so much dollar denominated european debt coming due in the near future it is not funny, and they cant roll over a huge chunk of it, and those that can refi, are paying an arm and a leg. Debt is 95% of european output and only 50% in the US. looking for places to go short cable and eur.

No problem Geotrdr. Wish more ppl were interested in trading for themselves…

  8. Geotrdr said

    Thanks for the update GetRich.

How would you feel about being the resident geppy poster? You probably watch the pair more than anybody here. It would be great to have your geppy analysis as a staple on the board. Obviously this depends on whether you are comfortable with such and have the time. If your not and or dont thats cool too but let us know anyway.

  9. GetRich said

    Geotrdr,

My geppy trade was a 60 pip loss. Went long on the break of 141.74 but it only went as high as 141.85 before reversing. I made 100 pips later when I went long again at the break of 141.85

  10. Your right there are great opportunities but paying for one isn’t the best

  11. Interesting points! I was actually thinking about this topic last night and this morning (particularly how to incorporate it into my own blog). Thanks for the tips, bro!

cad/jpy trade played out in my favour. TP on the trade was met for a profit of 154 pips.

Will probably spend this weekend going over the charts of my fav pairs as well as continued analysis of some new pairs I want to start trading. It is really worth the time to study past price action and draw the support and resistance lines ahead of time. When you do this the trades just jump out at you.

  13. Geotrdr said

Cad/Jpy trade is at 79.34. Moved SL to 80.04.

Eur/Usd bounced of the 1.3470 area. I didn’t do anything, I’m done for the week. All I have on the table is the cad/jpy trade. Have a nice weekend everybody.

  14. Geotrdr said

    CAD/JPY Trade update.

I just cancelled the sell order and manually filled it at 80.34
with a SL of 80.70 and a TP of 78.80. It was flirting with .40 and 5 or 6 pips was not going to kill me….i guess i had a moment of weakness. Lets see how the trade goes.

  15. Geotrdr said

    USD/CAD and CAD/JPY order update.

Neither have been fill but are still open.

Once again the cad/jpy fell just short of my trigger, it go to .32. I’m leaving it as is though.

The usd/cad found support at .2230-45 area and never got to my target. I thought about moving the order to .2235 but not really convinced by this uptick. Leaving the order as is for now.

    In other news.

eur/usd is stuck in the middle of a seven day range. Will look at it if it goes up to the 1.3733 level or if it falls to the 1.3470

Keeping an eye on the USD/JPY. I am watching to see if it gets up to the 99.60 level. Some good resistance there and could be a good area for a reversal.

    Thanks all for now.

  16. Geotrdr said

Order in post #206 never filled. Got within a couple pips but never filled. Anyway it did fall as I expected. Yesterday it fell to 79.30 or so. Continued to fall earlier today but found support at an old resistance, 78.80. Currently seeing a hammer bar formation.

On the usd/cad I have set a buy limit order buy at 1.2200 with a SL of 1.2170.
1.2200 has been strong support recently and I think it should hold if the pair gets there.

    GetRich
How did your geppy trade work out?

  17. Geotrdr said

    Hello all!

Hope everybody is doing well. I currently have my eyes on the cad/jpy. It is testing the resistance area of 80.40.

While it was not a perfect hammer, the bar formation we suspected would form on the 12th did signal a move to the upside. There was a pull back on the 19th and then the pair continued to move north to where we are now.

Both the weekly and the monthly have the bars moving to the upside. This resistance area has not been tested much so its strength could be seen as questionable. With that said, it does not appear to ME right now that the is enough momentum to considerably violate the restistance area today. Maybe another day but I dont think it will be today. The weekly and monthly may be signaling a trend reversal to the upside soooo a major pull back could be seen as an opp to go long in the future. But for now im looking to enter short.

In the time it took me to write this the pair went from 80.40 to 79.85.

I have place a Sell Limit Order, Lets see it it gets filled

    Sell order info info
    sell @ 80.40

I’m seeing a head and shoulders pattern on the GBP/JPY on the 4hr and daily charts. Waiting to see if we have a gap on market open later today. Looking to go long on a break of the recent resistance level around 141.75 or go short if we have a break of the recent low at 131.45. Take profit on either trade is 50 pips. Risking 60 pips. I enter these trades on a 1 min chart. As we know the market moves in an ABCD formation. If my planned entry price happens to be at the end of a long C-D move on the 1min chart I wait for a retracement and then enter on a break of D. Well I’ll be posting all my trades this week. Good luck to me…and others trying to supplement their “9-5″

  20. Mr. Söze said

Geo, I trade a very risky strategy for a beginner, i.e. most people here would almost certainly lose money on my entries. It is possible for you to make money on my trades, but your entry would be different from mine, you would usually enter later, when the risk/reward looks better to you, which is a perfectly legitimate strategy for a beginner, its just not as profitable if you have the experience to take on more risk.

Within a few weeks i think demo guys should trade real money in tiny amounts on a broker that allows you to make small enough trades so that you dont lose more than 5 or 10 dollars on a bad trade. Some like oanda for this type of trading because they allow you to input dollar units for your trades, so you dont have to trade huge 100K lots.

It is just like boxing. When you walk into a good gym, the trainer puts you in the ring as soon as he thinks you can hold your gloves up. Ringtime is key. It changes the way you think about boxing, it becomes real, rather than aerobics. Same in trading, it makes a huge difference in how you look at the market, if you even have $1 at risk, you would be surprised how your perspective changes.

cad/jpy update. I did not get to post my entry for this pair. And since I dont want to be one of those lame people that talk about how well their trade did (1 million pips man!) without posting their entry in a timely fashion I will not post the specifics. I just followed my plan of a 30pip SL move to BE and added a Trailing Stop.

Anyway lets look at what the pair did. The ppz is proving to be quite significant. Price went the the 74.00 level and has bounce right back up to the ppz. I honestly did not expect a bounce at this level and was looking for it to dip further. But then again I am new to this pair and it was a big move and to a round number as well. As of right now we can see a hammer forming on the daily candle. Its too early to tell if the candle will close as a hammer. But if it does it could represent a move to the upside.

Anyway thats it for now. I really dont see anything else out there I want to trade. Seems to be alot of chop out there right now, especially on the e/u. Well it seems that way to me, other may disagree. If the g/u reaches the 1.3530 area I will take a look at it.

Seems like this blog is becoming my personal trade journal. I hope others are benefiting from it. Once again all are welcome…beginner, novice, expert. (Ha ha hear me like is me own the blog)

I should have made it a little clearer that I am leaning to the short side of the cad/jpy.

  26. Geotrdr said

I dont usually trade the cad/jpy but it is at an interesting pivot point zone, around the 75.20 area. The area has been acting as support on the daily time frame for the past two weeks. Its testing that area again right now. If we drop down to the 4hr we a triple bottom forming.
This ppz is also close to the middle of a 4 month range.

So whats a trader to do long or short….will this support level be respected? Well I bumped up the time frame to 1 month and the current trend is down. However, the past 5 month seem to have been a consolidation of the pair. We could very well see a break out to the south. At the same time this could be seen as too close to a swing low….and entering short at a swing low could hurt. Going to watch it some more. Will post if I pull the trigger.

Eur/Usd has broken though 1.2725 resistance area. Its retracing back to that level now. This level has also acted as a pivot zone in the past. This zone could end up being short term support. If it breaks however, We could be going back to the 2500 level. Setting a sell order at 1.2712 which is just under the very bearish 1hr bar that sent this thing through the resistance. sl: 1.2742 tp: 1.2500

Will update later. Have a nice day.

I probably didnt stress the important things as much as I should have in my post above. The truth is I found that most sound technical strategies can work. They are freely available all over the place, and with a little tweaking to fit you personality, they will work. But all the technicals in the world can’t help a beginner if they cant master their emotions. You can teach a monkey the technicals necessary to trade in a week or 2 (the “turtle” experiment proved this). Its the physchological aspects that make 90% of traders lose all their money within a year. Its these mind issues that make you stray from your strategy that you came up with and tested when u demo traded.

Just as a beginner boxer does a lot of shadow boxing by himself at first to learn the proper form of a jab, hook, cross, slip etc. But if you put that beginner in a ring with a professional fighter, he strays from his strategy very quickly, i.e. “every fighter has a plan until they’ve been hit”. There is only one ring in trading, nobody pushed you in there, but nobody told you that Mike Tyson and Roy Jones would be in there either; but they are.

Trading is very similar, and below are the general ways I have seen that beginners stray from their strategy and lose money (and even pros from time to time):

    Greed:
    1. You trade too many contracts, some say you should never risk more than 2% of your trading capital on any one trade. (this is a very popular mistake, but no more deadly than the others)
    2. Your trades are too long. i.e. you get in too soon and/or get out too late.

    Fear:
    3. Your trades are too short. i.e. you get in too late and/or get out too soon.
    4. You trade too few contracts, you cant make money if you dont risk money. (very few beginners have this problem)

    Balance:
It sounds too simple right? Beginners dont like to hear these crazy things, they want to hear when and at what price to get in and when/where to get out. It’s important to understand that you are not fighting the market. You are fighting yourself.

FYI. The usd/jpy daily formed a bearish outside bar yesterday and we have a large bearish bar today. On the weekly we have what looks to be an inverted hammer forming.

The usd has been strengthen against the yen in the past weeks. The recently price patterns are reversal signals and we could see the yen strengthen. Friday can be a slow and tricky day to trade, but lets see we price closes today and then plan for a monday trade…or no trade.

usd/cad approaching the very important 1.30 level. I’m watching this one like a hawk. I had great fun with the triple top that formed over the oct, nov, and dec months last year. I’m watching to see what price does if we do get to the 1.3 level. I definetly have short on my mind though.

eur/usd tested the 2550 level today, bounced and looks like its retracing the bounce now. If we break through that support I will be looking to short and targeting the 2400 area.

indicators: i look at support/resistance, moving averages, macd, cci, histogram, ema 34 etc, a little fibs recently too; but i only use these so i know what all the retail and technical traders are thinking, then i look for the big boys to leave their footprints on the chart. when i see that, i side with the big boys, which is mostly against the technical retail boys like i was at the beginning. The institutionals always seem to have a fundamental story in their head that they trade with, but then they use technicals to trade against the retail crowd so that their volume doesnt move the market too much and cost them $$.

Live trading: NONE, ZERO, GOOSE EGG. No reason for you to look for me Mr. Tax Man.

    Demo trading:
2 years and the rest of my fx career will be in demo with play play money.

    Time devoted to trading:
Hmmmmm tough to say. I check on it in the morning when NY opens, check on it though out the day, check the the asian session at night, sometimes I wake up early and check the London session when it opens. If price is approaching an area of importance to me I will check in more often.

    If trading, general trading strategies/preferences:
Well in my DEMO ACCOUNT with PLAY PLAY MONEY, I watch what price is doing especially in relation to support and resistance lines that I have drawn. I definetly lean more to the technical side but I do pay attention to fundamentals though reports and the news. The time frames that I base my decision to go long or short are the daily and weekly. I will drop down to a lower time frame to pick my entry. Preferred currency pairs are eur/usd, gbp/usd, usd/cad.

If trading, preferred broker(s) and trading platform(s):
ODL is where I play with my PLAY PLAY MONEY with a DEMO ACCOUNT. It uses MT4.

Words of warning: Fx trading is NOT a get rich quick scheme. If you treat it as such you will be saying its a get poor quick scheme. There is a fine line between fx trading and gambling. Educated yourself on various aspects of fx trading so that you will be able to recognize trades that will give you a higher probability of a profitable trade.

    How can we best collaborate?
If we are going to post up our trades, lets try and post the entry point as soon as we open the trade, if possible. Share the reasons you decided to go long/short. Lets not be lame and post how much pips we JUST made off a trade we just closed AND THEN say what the entry point was.

Share you thoughts on what the marketing is doing. If you have an opinion on where its going explain what factors shaped your opinion.

Words of warning: Found out that there is a BIG difference with demo and live trading. Hard to effect the same strategy in the live markets as I second guess myself when I go live and will hesitate to enter a good trade. If I am in a losing position, once it goes positive, I will not wait to reach the target price and will close early. My demo trading results are better than live :)

Other recommendations: For those who are pressed for timme and wish to try an autotrader. I have been demo trading FAPturbo for a little over two weeks with various brokers. The demo results are good….and the results differ by broker and also by currency pair. I went live a week ago and set it up conservatively (not on all the currency pairs and risking little on each trade) and I have recovered the cost of the FAPturbo license.

The reason behind my trade above is the penetration of the 1.2700 support area. I have put my TP at 1.2428 which was a support area back in Dec. I will probably move my SL to Break Even (BE) if the trade reaches +30.

Just entered Short on the eur/usd
    Entry 1.2685
    SL 1.2715
    TP 1.2428

To answer your question….it depends. I mainly base my trading decision off of price action and support and resistance areas. So the amount of “time” I have my trades open for depends on what price is doing.

I hope you will post your trade entries as you make them. Take care.

Miggy, any update on Forex Autopilot? Is it still making money for you? Thanks

  58. flickers said

Wel yes i should think we all want to make money at some point. However, not many can now afford to find the little dribblings to reinvest. So the new auto bot. is a welcome move. Need more on it tho. Hope its not one more teefing scheem!!!!

GFTForex. I was gonna use GFTFutures to trade oil but their margin requirements are too high.

  61. Geotrdr said

Thanks for your point of view GetRich. The past couple of days also have me in the “not sure whats going on” box, and that goes for most of the pairs I trade. I’m sitting on the sidelines a bit until I’m more confident in my “guesses”

I don’t trade oil but I hope your strat plays out in your favour. Keep us posted.

    Who is your FX broker?

  62. GetRich said

Hmmm. The last five geppy 4hr candles are all bullish. Some profit taking is likely. It would be better for me to short soon if we get a candlestick formation like a doji followed by a long bearish candle.
Anyone trading oil? Been testing a strategy for trading oil and it has been working. Going live with ODL soon.

  63. GetRich said

I’m not bad at all. Been in and out of sell positions since 207.98 broke. Missed alot of entries though due to work. Not too sure what is going on right now. Could be a reversal taking place. In any case it should go down soon to retrace the recent bullish move. I will wait for the retracement down then hopefully we get a candlestick formation to go long again. On the south side I will wait til all the way down to 166 to go short again.

  64. Geotrdr said

Good to hear from you GetRich. How tings?

I’ve been watching the mad people pair….your geppy lol. Its retraced since last thurs. Good point for short entry? I’ll just be watching but i’m guessing its going south. Whats your take on it for this week?

    Miggy,

So far all of these bots selling online have failed in the long run. Hope it works for you though. Keep us updated on your progress.

I have both ….. autocash makes one trade a day…thats it…some sometimes not even that much.

autopilot is fully adjustable…this is the bot I use…little wins at a time add up in the end.

I’m confused…Auto Pilot, Auto Cash Robot, Forex Auto Pilot….These names are very similar and they all sell for just under $100 bucks for a limited time. Sounds fishy to me. Have you tried all of these or just the Auto Pilot?
I.m looking for a good program to purchase, but my research has uncovered a lot of scammers out there in ciber space!!! So mi a look good, good before mi jump. A nuf, nuf Bredda Anancy deh bout!

Dis ting a trade pon CRACK!! straight up!

you will loose but the wins will far out number the losses

  76. miggy said

    I tripped over this myself… Honestly…

I would give the program away for free if I could. it cost 97 bucks USD, but it will be the best 97 bucks you will ever spend. I’m just a small person like you who has come across away to trade FX a little easier.

mi a tell u dis asa JUmaican! the auto pilot can help you with your trading….mine is running right now making a few extra pips through the night.

The auto pilot claims 96% winning trades…but the other 4% of losing trades will wipe out all the 96% blam!

I don’t believe everything they say…but if you set it up correctly to scalp pips this thing is like minting money…I just figered out the right settings..I’ve lost some money but I’m making a come back…

look at todays sheet..not big trades but a whole lot of little trades…

Question For the Forex xperts. I have been wading around in the Forex kiddie pool for the last few months – lost most of my play money! Someone sent me this site recently. Common sense and my brief experience trading forex tells me 8 years of positive returns are not possible!. What do you think.

Very informative site. I am happy to see we are trying to learn trading instead of giving our hard earned $$ to tricksters. I have been doing this for quite awhile, (commodities) last eight years, and more recently Forex. I was always a part-time trader but my Real Estate and Mortgage Brokerage business is going through some hard times and I find myself trading more on a full-time basis these days. I should have switched to Forex and close my other business a long time ago. Now I trade from home and save gas at the same time. Caan beat dat bredda!!

    Greetings

    Started demo trading this week.

Lost on the three EURUSD trades that I put in on Sunday night. Approx 100 -ve pips.
Monday night took profit on two, lost on one – net result 24 +ve pips

I’m off work today so this morning I tried the 3AM straddle for the GBP/USD and USD/JPY and it worked out well in the end, even though I was uncomfortable with the risk and I didn’t reach the USD/JPY TP until 9PM tonight. Created a spreadsheet before so I woke up would just have to plug in the highs and lows of the candles…knew that my brain would not cooperate at 3:45AM.

Also put in 4 EUR/USD demo trades around 1PM today. Closed them out to lock in small profits before I turned in for the night.

    Today’s results – 154 +ve pips

Hoping I can continue to carve time out for months of demo trading. I’ve created a spreadsheet to track these trades and hopefully see where I can learn from my mistakes and figure out what works for me.

    Night.

    @ Geotrdr – 129 . Excellent advice.

Question to the traders… I’ve just started demo trading and understand the basics of the technical approach (support/resistance, candlestick formations, Fibs, trend/counter-trendlines). I realize I need to brush up on crown reversals, gartleys etc, but I have the materials. I think my most significant gaps are

    (1) understanding which fundamental announcements are important and
    (2) having an in-depth understanding of the indicators.

Do you recommend any specific sites or books for addressing either of these?
    Appreciate any pointers.
    Thanks
    Rabbit

I appreciate your trust in my “quiz” abilities. You still need to call though Yes Man. Dont be shy. Just call and talk to him, feel him out for yourself. Ask him to send you a course outline.

ForEx is an extrememly demanding thing. It is very hard on your psyche and requires a tremendous amount of discipline. Educating yourself on forex is obviously the corner stone of any good fx trader. A lot of what you go through in Forex, from education to trading to dealing with losses, you will be going through on your own, alone, nobody will be there to hold your hand. Calling this guy is just one of the first baby steps in building your Forex education.

Have you completed babypips.com yet? If so, how many times?

  95. yes man said

    no i didnt call
not sure i would have been able to quiz him
    the way you would

i would be happy to hear some feedback in this regard

    thanks

Nothing much to report here. Been mostly on the sideline watching.

I saw the ads, one for classes and the other for “signals”. If you already called and did not get any substance, there is probably none there.

  97. yes man said

    hey guys,

went short at 210.45. exited at 209.90 after it quickly bounced back up from 209.67. gft’s dealbook platform froze on me during this trade. first time experiencing this. anyway quick little profit. this trade took less than 10 minutes. gotta love this pair.

  101. GetRich said

Well looking at the geppy weekly chart u see the perfect head and shoulders/crown reversal that occurred last year. The current uptrend from 192 low seems like a correction before we head down again. It keeps bouncing up off the trendline though so I am waiting for a break of the trendline and break of 210.55 before going short. Break of 207.97 and we definitely heading back down imo. On the upside if we break 214 I am going long to test 215.87 and above. Makes sense?

  102. Rabbit said

Question to the traders – do you use a spreadsheet or some other electronic trading journal?

    Any recommendations?

    GetRich,

Congrats on the CAD pip grab. I’m watching out some retracement next week. May be small but I’m expecting it. However, A strong loonie the Canadian economy does not like. Canadian economy is cooling plus the US economy is in the dumps and the canadian exports are feeling it. So my guess is a strong dollar for that pair. I’m watching for a good long entry on Monday. As far as the E and G I’m not touching that UNTIL I see a strong reversal. Not going to guess where the bottom is. I’ll wait until the bears run out of steam and then enter AFTER I see the reversal. I’ll feel better with that guess…lol.

Whats your take on the Geppy for next week? 207.xx????

  104. GetRich said

I don’t like getting in late so I was hesitant to short the euro and the pound. Made some pips off my late USD/CAD buy though. Both EU and GU are at significant levels right now where a reversal could occur. I would love that. Get in early this time.

  105. Geotrdr said

I guess nobody else was as excited about the EUR/USD happenings LOL. USD unleashing a beating. People who bet on the USD having a ball right now. Interesting stuff and interest times ahead. Is this the start of a USD comeback or just a fake out?. Not sure if a correction is on its way or not. Staying on the side lines until Monday morning or so.

Definetly something to watch tonight and I’m making sure I’m up at 3am. I just want to see what happens now that we broke the .5300 support level.

Gone long on USD/CAD at 1.0504
    SL at 1.0437
    TP open(watching it)

  109. Geotrdr said

    GetRich.

Agreed. It was risky. But I saw some resistance on the smaller time frames and went with it. I actually thought it would have gone down more than it did. Today should be interesting for the pair. Building Permits news to be released this morning. I waiting until after that to enter. If it on the plus side or beats forecasts, retracement. If not, 1.0500 and above. Thats my take.

    To All
Glad to see more and more chatter in here. Keep it up.

    Geotrdr,

    you traded the retracement. risky.

    Maria,

Are you scalping? eight successful trades for 45 pips seems small to me? What time frame do you watch?

  120. maria said

hi guys. i have opened and been been trading a demo a/c using just one lot as i would do with real money for the past 4 days and havent lost in eight trades. i do maximum 3 trades per day and am up 45.62 (which is about US$456.20)i think. is that good or bad? trying to implement the discipline MTI taught me. lol.if needs be i can share the demo a/c # and password with u guys so you can check my closed position records to verify.

You are doing a good job keeping this section going. I’m hoping to be able to participate as a novice in a month or two when I’ll have less on my plate. Will be doing some demo trading then.

Notice that your risk/reward ratio for the trades today are high. Do you typically aim for a 1:2 ratio?

USD/CAD TP Hit. Will keep on eye on the pair. Still some room for it to go a little lower. My overall out look is bullish though so waiting for a good entry point to go long. Interested to see what happens around 2:15pm with the US Interest Rates at FOMC.

Keeping a close eye on this one. I believe the long term on this is bullish…very bullish. Before you know it the pair will be back at 1.1500. But there should be some retracement today.

    GBP/USD Long
    Entry 1.9554
    SL 1.9500
    TP 1.9600

    USD/CAD

Possible reversal for the USD/CAD. Pair hasn’t been at it current level since Jan. But if the pair does push through 1.0400 without a reversal first then we could be heading to 1.0500. I think there will be a reversal first but I’m waiting for a “clear” reversal signal in tomorrows trading before I short. FOMC and US Federal Funds Rate will be out at tomorrow so that will also have to be taken into consideration. FOMC is forecasted to be slightly dovish and the federal funds rate is expected to be hold at 2%.

    EUR/USD
I’m not sure what to make of this pair right now. Maybe after tomorrows US news releases at 2:15 i’ll have a better fix…but eh i doubt it…lol.

    GBP/USD
I think there may be a small correction from todays dollar rally. But I think we are on our way down to 1.9555 and then the bulls will kick in again.

Thats all I got right now.

    1) No problem Yes Man. Glad to provide whatever help I can.

2)This guy does sound like he’s try to make a money on the side. What exactly does he teach while he trades? How to execute an order, read charts? Try and squeeze out some more info about his course and himself, cant hurt. He obviously has a regular day job. Find out want it is….I would be interested to know. Do you know this guys name?

You need to thoroughly go through babypips.com….THOROUGHLY. Go through it thoroughly three times. Dont cheat yourself. You need to get a basic understanding of fx before you do anything.

    3) “Trading” is done when the markets are open. With that said here are the market hours

New York opens 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST
Tokyo opens 7:00 pm to 4:00 am EST
Sydney opens 5:00 pm to 2:00 am EST

  134. GetRich said

    Yes Man,

If u want to go live with $500 u could sign up with a broker that offers micro accounts where each pip is worth roughly 10 cents. That way your $500 will be able to withstand losing streaks. Profits will be much smaller but no big deal because you are just testing out the knowledge u have acquired. Personally, I do not like demo accounts because I find it hard to practise proper money management and remain disciplined with fake money.

  135. GetRich said

    Yes Man,

Sounds to me like that guy is just trying to make some easy money. You should ask him 4 a course outline and see if he intends to teach u the same things you already know like support and resistance, fibs, trendlines, etc.
There is a saying “Those who can, do; Those who can’t, teach”

  136. yes man said

    i really appreciate your help
the guy took out the ad in the classified
section (just two lines) no course outline, his method is to teach while he trades between say 7pm and 10 pm at his home.

However i heard from someone else that trading is done between 12 midnight and 10 am which is when the European market is open.

Question: can someone take a year to sufficiently learn enough (say 1 hour each day is devoted to learning) to trade successfully?

  137. Geotrdr said

Keep educating yourself. Did you completely go through ALL the grades in babypips? Did you take ALL the test and get 100%?

You need to do your research on this “guy”. Was it a full page ad, was in a little ad in the classified section? Whats his name? Where is his office? Did you get a course outline from him? Need more info before I can give you my two cents.

I am not sure what you mean with the statement ” but if real trades are done between 3 am and 10 am I am not sure what he will teach me from 7 to 9 pm”. Explain please. Do you mean you will only be able to trade between 7 and 9 pm. Or are you questioning when he will be able to teach
    you?

Sorry to hear about your losses in the schemes. The crashes have put serious pressure on people. However do not just jump into the fire of fx trading to “recoup” your loses. Learning fx takes alot of time, discipline, and dedication. Its not a get rich quick thing….infact its a get broke quick thing.

The demo at oanda is pretty good and straight forward. Its Java based some you don’t actually have to download anything.

In any case, you started to educate yourself, so that in itself is a step in the right direction. Keep learning. Scour the internet, there is lots you can learn about.

How long have you been trading your demo account?

  139. yes man said

not much education there apart from
    babypips.com

this gentleman ( dont know much about him)
took out an ad in the paper where he will give 20 hours training for US$1000.00 i was thinking of signing up with him, but if real trades are done between 3 am and 10 am I am not sure what he will teach me from 7 to 9 pm

i need to recoup some of my money lost in these schemes
so i really want to learn for myself

whats a good demo account to use then?

  140. Geotrdr said

    @82

    Yes Man

My opinion is you heard wrong. Synergy is a bad word to use in this instance. Synergy implies combining two elements resulting in a greater effect than if they were used seperately. Your not mixing a demo account with a live account. You are using a demo account to practise BEFORE you go live. Why spend 500 bucks to do something you can do for free.

With a demo account you can watch how a pair moves, get a feel for support and resistance, see how movements affect your position, study the charts, practice money management, see how leverage and lot sizes affect you account, etc etc.

Quotes are basically the same. The only thing that is really missing from a demo account is the how trading real money as opposed to play money affects the traders psyche. That part is night and day. My recommendation is to trade your demo account as if it were real money. Make sure the demo account amount is something that is realistic to you, eg 5,000 and not 10,000,000. You may even want to start getting up at 3 am to trade you demo account. Treat it as if it were the real thing. It will make the transition to “live” a little smoother.

You still have not answered the question in regards to your forex education.

  141. yes man said

    i am not using any
i have heard that the synergy between demo accounts and real live trading is almost nonexistent.

I was hoping to learn using a real live account and $US500.00 that I can “afford” to loose

Is that a smart way to go??

I use ODL. But do YOUR OWN homework. Different people take to different brokers for different reasons.

I really don’t know what type of leverage or lot sizes you are planning on using but my GUESS is your going to be under capitalized with $500. What is the purpose of openning this account? To test the waters? Something to play with?

“Are charts that important to study?” Charts are EXTREMELY important to study. You also need to be aware of the different economic news releases.

Yes it is. Hope it continues because it has been moving real “slow” in recent months. I loss my buy trade posted in post 72 above but went short as soon as I was stopped out. usually don’t do that but I made back most of the loss. Then I went long after the doji formed at the end of the bearish move. It was also a bounce off the 211.55 support line so I was pretty confident that the trade would be positive. caught 200 pips!! sweet

Well looking at a daily chart the pair is still in a downtrend. It has broken the inner trendline and is moving upwards towards the outer trendline. Currently at a strong resistance level near 214. Might fall from here or break and go right up to the outer trendline where it may bounce down and continue the downtrend or break and confirm the reversal. Agree?

  155. PIPSologist said

    Hey GetRich…
I trade the GBP/JPY when I have time to watch the trade. Even when my technical indicators line up for this pair, I am usually hesitant to make a trade. This pair is thinly traded, hence the volatility. Having said this, one can really make some good profits on this pair.

I am currently in a short position on the pair after hitting up against the FIB 0.0% on my 20-day 1-hour chart…I am down about 90 PIPs, but I am not concerned because it will come back unless we have some really good news out of GB or really bad news out of JP, which would stop me out.

    eur/usd
I see a possible short position setting up. Went past 1.6011 today. I think the bulls are running out of steam. Now at 1.9920. Its actually pretty tempting to short it now. But I’ll wait until it closes.

I just stumbled across your blog. I am very pleased to see a vibrant community of Jamaican traders exchanging ideas on the FOREX market. This is awesome!!!

I have been trading the FOREX market live for about 12-months now. I have been trading the securities markets for over 22-years. That includes Stocks, Options, Futures, and now FOREX. I am fascinated by the possibilities of the FOREX market, but am fully cognizant of the risks.

I do most of my trading at night as I am fully employed during the day time. Sometimes I will get an alert from my trading platform for a trade during the day, and then I would check the charts and execute a trade, looking for 30 to 60-PIPs depending on the setup. I consider myself a fundamentalist, but I rely heavily on technical analysis as well.

Over the past 4-months or so, I have been playing the market using some technical indicators for longer-term trades. A long-term trade for me is 2-3 days. With most of these trades, I am usually out within 2 – 4 hours. I seldom leave trades running over the weekend, so most trades are closed out by 2:00PM on Friday.

If trades are left for more than 3-days, they would more than likely be “carry trades” where I am picking up interest on a long position, only when fundamental indicators are in my favor. For instance, I have been playing the AUD/USD regularly over the past 4-months, with much success. Sometimes I would let these trades run for 3+ days, collecting both the interest as well as the gains in PIPs. Whenever I trade this way, I constantly manage the trade by moving up my stop loss each time I get 20 to 40 PIPs in my favor. With this strategy, my losses are mitigated and most times I am able to lock in my profits.

I have also been using a “straddle” strategy to buy various pairs to collect PIPs when key news is published on the currencies. For those of you trading Stock Options, you should be familiar with the “straddle” method. The way it works is that you would buy Long and Short positions on the same currency pair. Each position [long and short] would have a stop loss of 15 to 30 PIPs. Immediately after the NEWS is published to the public, one of the positions would be stopped out, and the other would collect 40 to 120 PIPs depending on the PAIR and/or the news. So the net profit could be 10 to 90 PIPs on the remaining position. This strategy is not without risk as well. If, for example, there is a lot of volatility just ahead of the news, you stand the chance of getting stopped out on both sides (long / short) of the trade.

I successfully used this strategy last Thursday, July 3rd for the non-farm payroll and U.S. unemployment rate announcements. The pairs used last week were EUR/USD, AUD/USD and USD/CAD. I have found that the biggest profits are gained on these currencies with the following news:

-Non-farm payroll and unemployment rate for USD
-Interest Rate decision for any country – BOE, BOC, FOMC, RBA, BOJ, etc.
-Retail Sales for most countries. With the EUR, this is a little trickier, but Germany usually drives the EUR more than any other country.
-Trade deficit figures for most countries
    -Manufacturing figures
-Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for most countries

The best place to get this news is http://www.forexfactory.com/

This straddle strategy works well on the following pairs:

    - EUR/USD
    - GBP/USD
    - USD/CAD
    - EUR/CAD
    - AUD/USD
    - NZD/USD
    - USD/CHF

In order to buy a long and short position on the same pair at the same time, your trading platform/broker must support this feature. Most brokers do not support a straddle on FOREX.

Another good site for FOREX analysis is: http://www.pfxglobal.com/

USD/CAD update. Pair dipped back down to 1.0066 level and is bouncing around the previous support of 95. Not really a fan of opening new trades on Fridays, so will watch the pair for a re-entry on monday or so. If we break 1.0050 we may be heading south to 0.9830 or so.

Well the usd/cad didn’t see much action. We will see what happens tomorrow. I don’t expect the cad news releases to be anything but so-so. Without strong positive news the $ should strengthen plus there has not been a break out to 1.0050. Anyway I gone my bed. More later.

Came across this. Thought I would share.

    The Most Profitable Traders

They are experienced – Probably the most horrifying and worst myth shot out to anyone considering trading for a living is that you will compound millions in an extremely short amount of time. The only true way to make every day profitable comes through experience, and countless hours learning is crucial to longevity of success.

They know the damage they are capable of – Notice I didn’t say potential or profits here. The best traders I know of understand their limits, and seem to focus more on what can go wrong than what can go right. They are not easily convinced of lucrative outcomes, and have a very high sense of self-awareness.

They trade to make money, not to be right – They understand the strengths and possible pitfalls of what it is they do for a living, and use that knowledge to curb their emotional output.

They have an edge and know how to use it – They understand that without it they wouldn’t last long

They have a gameplan, and follow it explicitly – Each trade is planned and opportunities are scouted for before any trading takes place. They steer away from the killers of all killers: overtrading.

They manage risk – Regardless of how much conviction they have on a trade, they will still do what they can to avoid the potential of any losses and understand rule #1 about trading: anything can happen.

They work obsessively – They follow each turn, each piece of info that comes out in regards to their trade, and follow any underlying information relevant to failure or success.

They only access the best information – Information rules in trading, and having some of the best translates to money. Using the wrong information leads to failure.

They think about the trade, not the money behind it – Focusing on money can destroy your means to objectively assess the trade itself.

They are constantly learning – Just when you think you know it all about trading, a new curveball gets thrown your way, not to mention there are continued means and methods to be learned about making money. Even the most highly successful trader I ever knew, a multi-billion dollar portfolio manager, has a team of fundamentalists and technicians come in to train and retrain himself and his traders.

They are active – Activity sparks creativity, a very crucial part of trading.

They have patience – They understand that the money will come, but everything needs to be in place, first.

It’s a bouncing. It actually broke the 95 support area, dropped down to 74. Lets see what happens…hopefully 150!

Watching the usd/cad. I’m seeing some support around the 1.0095 level. I expect it to bounce off this level. Still early but I seeing it returning to around 1.0150 or so in the coming days. Thoughts?

Whats up guys I just spoke to my brother-in-law who is a cop in Ottawa and he said he has a contact in BC who could check it out for me but , it’s going to take about a week or so. I’ll keep you posted.

  188. DW said

Ms p, somthing about Rove is drawing my attention, but am not able to pin point what it is…maybe the need for transparency, since you are on that side of the globe, could you get a second thumbs up… even a third …that Rove actually has a physical location in Canada. This is all in the…Think and Check process.

  189. Patricia said

FXCM is a glorified bucket shop, but hey!!. I dont think spreading your wings to include them would be such a great idea. That’ just my personal opinion. So the Vancouver address for Rove is not just a mail drop, good to hear. Thanks Patrick

  190. Patrick said

Hey guys, I’m from victoria BC and i’ve met with the traders at Rove Capital. They actually helped me setup Oanda and fill some forms. It’s definitely an added bonus for me knowing they are an established company with a physical location. I’ve only been with them for 2 months so I cant comment on their long term performance, but the last 2 months have been great.

By the way does anyone have any experience with FXCM managed accounts? I’m wouldn’t mind spreading out my money a bit amongst fx brokers, but haven’t had too much experience with them.

For the won account, I wanted to test them out but i noticed the fees were higher, i’m assuming because it is done through an IB (managedforexpro).

  191. Vela Invest said

Hey, Patricia if we could find if Rove Capital has a physical address in Vancouver it would be nice. I have some peps. in Ottawa and trying to work that end, but if you find something out please let me know. Hey did you try out the demo account with Zulu I did and I used a few different trader but, none of them are consistent and I find them way to aggressive. Did you happened to check out http://managedforexpro.com/won_track.html I posted it before, if you get a chance take look and let me know. Thanks

  192. Patricia said

Vela, I too like what I have seen so far about Rove. Now I cant confirm whether that Vancouver address is a real physical presence. I am on the otherside Toronto. I like that they are flat at the end of the day and make use of hard stops as John stated. Too many traders are overly aggressive with folks’ money, cuz at the end of the day whether u lose or not they get paid. I noticed too that where there is a losing month, they say they will first have to make up the loss the next month before their perf fee kicks in. The way I see it, if they can maintain an average of say 6-7% pm, I’m cool with that. The stress that comes with higher gains has become a bit tedious and taxing.

  193. John said

Hey Vela, as far as I know they are looking to expand and its probably a marketing tactic. I mean personaly I would probably test a company i don’t know with $1000 rather than $10000. But I think they know any serious investor would increase the investment once they are comfortable and are happy with the results. Also what really seperates them is they almost never hold positions overnight, I have yet to see them lose control and hold a large losing position, they always have hard stops. Anytime i had questions i just called them and they were always there to help.

    Have a good weekend!
    JOhn

I was leaning towards Rove Capital, but do you know why they lower there min. to $1000.00

  195. John said

I am currently investing with Rove Capital http://www.rovecapital.com for the past 6 months, and they have got to be the most professional company i have delt with, great communications, very steady gains, they don’t put your account at risk by over leveraging. I would highly recommend them, seems to be a good time since they lowered their minimum investment to $1000 for the month of june

Definitely check out the “Trading Strategies” on the left-hand side. I think there are a few good ideas there…especially the one on “Risk-Free Arbitrage with Spread Betting.”

Don I always had my reservations about forexpeacearmy.com…I still check them out but I take the results with a big grain of salt.

  205. HD said

    Thanks Jay/Geotrdr,

I have seen the charges but these charges seem minimal so far compared to the gain in pips (or potential gain). Maybe because I dont have a 50,000 account. Heck I don’t even have a 20,000 account so my trades are fairly small right now using what I think is good money management.

    HD,

Yeah.. can be bad…can be good. You are going to be charged interest on your short position and you will earn interest on your long positions. Just be aware of your brokers interest charges. Google “Carry Trade” and you can get some more info on this.

    Are you live or demo?

  208. Jay said

    HD @ 14.

Holding postion over night can be a killer ie after 5pm you get what is know as interest swap ie the difference in interest rates between the currencies you are holding.
If you are holding a short postion for example, you will notice that you pay the difference in interest rate ie you see a negative figure for interest rate.

If you are going long, you typically will see a gain, its really a double edge sword.

Are you holding positions over night?

  212. HD said

Okay so based on those trades yesterday which were swing trades the results were:

    EURUSD = +100pips
    USDCAD = 0
GBPUSD = -60 (got up to +50 then got hit up by the news this morning…!@#$%)
EURGBP = +2 (coward and closed early…. could have closed this morning +70 pips)

    Thats it for this week

  213. Geotrdr said

Ah yes! Some chat going on! Mission accomplished. No trades today…yet… sitting tight and monitoring.

  214. HD said

I broke my rule and went short on the EURUSD…up 50 pips so far. Down some pips on the USDCAD but expect that and will be in it for the big push.

  215. HD said

Bway Kevin, find the USDCAD pair a tricky animal with my trading strategy so I tend to approach cautiously.

So after losing a few pips on the EURUSD I flipped my trades to shorting the pair and started making pips again. Not sure how much longer can continue to short.

Today I am looking for some pips going short on gbpusd and eurgbp and going long on usdcad. Got my last pips off the EURUSD lastnight and will stay away until later this evening during early Asia. If the trend continues I will probably look for upwards of 100 more pips shorting EURUSD.

  216. Kevin said

    HD,
Hope you took advantage of the lower Canadian interest rate this morning. The USD/CAD moved up a fair bit as expected. Volatility also seems good in this pair.
